The days of old analog PA systems with physical bell controllers are giving way to IP-based audio systems - and K12 Montana installs and supports IP PA systems for Montana schools for good reason. They're more flexible, easier to manage, and can be integrated with scheduling software and emergency alert systems in ways that analog systems never could.
Here's a friendly overview of how these systems work and what your school staff needs to know.
What Is an IP Speaker?
An IP speaker (like the Algo units K12 Montana installs) is essentially a network device that happens to make sound. It has an IP address, connects to your school's network, and receives audio and commands over the network just like any other connected device.
This means each speaker can be managed, updated, and configured from anywhere on the network - no physical access required.
Bell Schedules
In a traditional system, a physical bell controller fires the bells on a hardwired schedule. In an IP system, bell schedules are often managed by a central controller or scheduling server, which sends the bell signal to all speakers simultaneously over the network. Changes to the schedule - early dismissal, modified days - can typically be made from a web interface without touching any hardware.
Paging
Announcements are made from a microphone (often in the main office) that's connected to the network. When the office keys the mic, an audio stream goes out over the network to all speakers (or a selected group of them) simultaneously. Volume levels can be adjusted per-speaker if some rooms need it louder or quieter.
Managing Volume: The Staff Can Handle It
For volume adjustments - bell volume and paging volume - school staff can make changes themselves by logging into individual speakers via their IP address from a web browser. K12 Montana provides a Speaker Chart with all IP addresses for your organization.
When to Call K12 Montana
For anything beyond volume adjustments - adding new speakers, reconfiguring zones, troubleshooting audio quality issues, or integrating with a new scheduling system - that's a job for K12 Montana.
