It's Monday morning. A teacher locked themselves out of their Google account over the weekend. The students are waiting. This is one of the most frequent support calls K12 Montana receives from school offices - and the good news is it takes under two minutes to fix.
Go to the Google Admin Console
Sign in and click Directory on the left sidebar. Use the search bar at the top to find the user by name. Click on their name when it appears.
Reset the Password
On their profile page, look just below their name and click Reset Password.
Use a password generator like dinopass.com to create a temporary password - something random but easy to read aloud or write down. Check the box for Ask user to change their password when they sign in. Then click Reset.
Hand Off the Temporary Password
Give the temporary password to the user. Let them know they'll be asked to create their own new password the moment they log in.
A Few Tips
Don't use simple, predictable passwords as temporaries. Something like "BlueDog42" is fine for a temporary, but a generator produces something harder to guess. Also, if your district uses 2FA, the user will need their second factor available when they sign in with the new password.
If a user is having trouble with 2FA after a password reset, see our article on handling new device 2FA setup.
