Changing a Google User's Name Or Email Address

You can change a user’s work profile name or email address without losing any of their data.

The user will...

  • Start receiving email sent to their new email address
  • Sign in to their account with the new address (the old email address won't work)
  • Continue to get email sent to their old address, which becomes an email alias
  • Continue to access emails, files, and data associated with the old address
  • Email sent to the new email address and the old (alias) address is delivered to the user’s same inbox

Step1: Export Chrome Bookmarks and Passwords

*This step needs to be done by person (the user) who is getting the Name/Email change.

  1. In Chrome, go to More > Bookmarks > Bookmark Manager
  2. Select the Organize button (3 vertical dots at the top-right of the Bookmark Manager screen).
  3. Select the Export bookmarks option.
  4. Specify a destination to save the bookmarks.
  5. Select Save.
  6. To export the passwords, open password-manager>settings
  7. Click Download file.

Step 2: Change A User’s First Or Last Name and Username

*This step is done by the Google Administrator

  1. In the Google Admin console, go to Menu >Directory>Users.
  2. In the Users list, find the user.
  3. Point to the user and click Rename user.
Note: You can also find the Update user at the left of the user's account page.

  6. Click Update User.
  7. Click Done.
