You can change a user’s work profile name or email address without losing any of their data.
The user will...
- Start receiving email sent to their new email address
- Sign in to their account with the new address (the old email address won't work)
- Continue to get email sent to their old address, which becomes an email alias
- Continue to access emails, files, and data associated with the old address
- Email sent to the new email address and the old (alias) address is delivered to the user’s same inbox
Step1: Export Chrome Bookmarks and Passwords
*This step needs to be done by person (the user) who is getting the Name/Email change.
- In Chrome, go to More > Bookmarks > Bookmark Manager
- Select the Organize button (3 vertical dots at the top-right of the Bookmark Manager screen).
- Select the Export bookmarks option.
- Specify a destination to save the bookmarks.
- Select Save.
- To export the passwords, open password-manager>settings
- Click Download file.
Step 2: Change A User’s First Or Last Name and Username
*This step is done by the Google Administrator
- In the Google Admin console, go to Menu >Directory>Users.
- In the Users list, find the user.
- Point to the user and click Rename user.
Note: You can also find the Update user at the left of the user's account page. - Change the First name and/or Last name
- Under Primary email, enter the new username.
- Click Update User.
- Click Done.
Step 3: Import Bookmarks and Passwords
*This step needs to be done by person (the user) who is getting the Name/Email change.
- Open Chrome. Sign in with your newly renamed Google Account.
- Go to More > Bookmarks > Bookmark Manager
- Select the Organize button at the top-right of the Bookmark Manager screen.
- Select the Import bookmarks option.
- Specify the file saved previously.
- Open chrome passwords>password manager>settings
- Click Select file in the Import passwords.
After you change an email address...
- The user must now sign in to their Google Account with the new email address.
- The user continues to receive mail sent to the old email address (it becomes an email alias).
